Among the vegetables grown in summer cottages, carrots take an honorable second place after potatoes. She is quite demanding on growing conditions, so gardeners often complain that she has not born, the roots are small, twisted and poorly stored. To avoid this, we will share with you the secret of proper agricultural practices for growing carrots in the open field.
How to grow carrots outdoors
Growing carrots in open ground in Ukraine is almost no different from growing carrots in open ground in the Moscow region. The difference is only in the timing of sowing and the seed material used. By creating optimal conditions for plants to grow and develop, you will get an excellent harvest, regardless of the climatic zone.
The best conditions for carrots
This root vegetable is grown outdoors. Climatic conditions in our latitudes make it possible to grow carrots without the use of seedlings. To obtain a crop in a shorter time, you can also use the seedling method. Contrary to the erroneous opinion, seedlings take root and develop well. To obtain a high yield, the soil must be loose and nutritious.
Soil for carrots
If the seeds are planted in heavy, insufficiently moisture-intensive soil, germination may decrease markedly. In such soil, air exchange is disturbed, root crops suffer from fungal diseases, and taste qualities are significantly reduced. Therefore, it is best to plant carrots on loamy or sandy soils mixed with sand, with a pH of 6-7.
It is contraindicated to grow this root crop in one place. Otherwise, in the 2nd year, damage by Alternariosis, carrot fly, nematode and aphids cannot be avoided. Therefore, every year the planting of carrots needs to be changed; you can return to the previous one no earlier than 4 years. The best predecessors are tomatoes, legumes, cucumbers and cabbage. Parsley, dill, parsnips and cumin are not suitable.

Planting dates vary depending on what goal you are pursuing: to get early vegetables or later carrots for winter storage. They also depend on weather conditions and characteristics of the variety. The soil before planting must be properly prepared and the seeds processed.
In order to enjoy juicy crispy carrots in the summer, early varieties are used, for example, Vitamin 6. For storage in winter, we recommend the varieties “Queen of Autumn”, “Moscow Winter” and “Golden Autumn”.
For 1 sq. m. of soil is introduced 5 l. humus or compost, additionally put nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium fertilizers. The soil is dug up 2 weeks before planting, half a shovel bayonet deep.
The introduction of sawdust improves the structure of the soil, it becomes looser, the root crops grow large and are well stored. For sowing seeds, grooves are cut every 15 cm, no more than 2 cm deep. The soil is watered before that.
Early carrots are sown in early April, later varieties – from mid-April to the first days of May. Some varieties germinate no earlier than 25 days. Seed treatment significantly speeds up this process. One of the ways is a solution of ash (20 g per liter of water). It is insisted for 2 days, the seeds are soaked in it for 4 hours. Processing is carried out not earlier than one day before sowing. Seed preparation methods are presented in the table below.
If you sow carrots before winter, the seeds do not need to be processed, they are sown dry. You will receive the harvest earlier by 2-3 weeks, but it is not suitable for storage, it is eaten in the summer-autumn period.
Seeding and shoots
Seeds can be sown in bulk, in rows or furrows. When sowing in bulk, the seeds are scattered over the entire surface of the bed. After watering, cover with a covering material or film. As disadvantages of the method, one can note either meager or very dense seedlings that are difficult to thin out. Also, in the case of rapid growth of weeds, seedlings may die, weeds will simply crush them.
When sowing in rows, the seeds are placed at a distance of 7 cm from each other. But when it rains, they can be washed out of the soil and not ascend.
Care for carrots in the open field, top dressing
This root crop does not require special care, it is standard, it includes pest control, thinning, loosening, weeding, watering and regular feeding. As a long daylight crop, sufficient sunlight is needed for rapid growth and development. Growing with a lack of sun, placing beds in the shade or partial shade will lead to a significant reduction in yield
Carrot thinning is carried out 2 times: the first, when the first 2 leaves appear, a gap of 2.5-3 cm is left between the plants. A month later, when the diameter of the carrots reaches about 1-1.5 cm, the gap between them is increased to 6 cm. , tearing out excess root crops (they can be used for food).
So that the head of the root crop does not become bitter in taste and does not turn green, carrots need regular loosening, watering, and weed removal.
In warm and sunny weather, carrots are watered 3 times a week, per 1 sq. m. you need 4 liters. water. With the growth of plants, the dose is increased. In the middle of the growing season, a single watering in 7 days is enough, and 20 days before harvesting it is stopped completely so that the vegetables do not crack.

One of the conditions for how to properly grow carrots in open ground is plant nutrition. The first is carried out 10 days after germination, 1 tbsp. l. potassium sulfate and 1.5 tbsp. l. double superphosphate per 10 l. water.
After another couple of weeks, a secondary top dressing is carried out, diluted in 10 liters. water, 1 tablespoon of azophoska and potassium sulfate. From organic fertilizers, good results are obtained by watering with a solution of bird droppings, pouring it into the aisles.
