Gardeners know that garlic is spring and winter. Each species has its pros and cons: the winter one pleases with a plentiful harvest, but quickly deteriorates, but the spring one gives a smaller crop, but can be stored for a whole year.

Differences in the types of garlic
Winter and spring garlic differ at first glance at these two different species. In winter, a rod sticks out of the middle of the bulb, but spring does not have such a rod. The cloves of the winter bulb are large, single-layered. Spring cloves are small, at least in two layers. And most importantly, planting winter garlic takes place in the fall, and spring garlic should be planted in the spring.
Planting winter garlic
Growing winter garlic outdoors is a business that improves every year, so there are several ways to plant garlic:
Garlic is planted in place of already harvested vegetables: cucumbers, cabbage, radishes, etc. The main thing is not to the bottom. The soil is fertilized with manure and humus, furrows of 25 cm are made. Uncleaned cloves (choose the largest ones) are planted at a distance of 10-12 cm, then they are closed, watered (melt water is not allowed in spring) and mulched.
2) Double fit
This is an autumn planting of garlic in two levels – one above, the other below. The groove is dug deeper, and the teeth of the first level are planted at a depth of 12 cm. Don’t worry, they will be comfortable. The first row is sprinkled with earth, then, at a depth of 7 cm, the second row of garlic is planted. The distance between the teeth is maintained at 11-15 cm, between the grooves is about 25 cm. Planting is sprinkled with earth.
An alternative to planting garlic deep in the ground is to lay the cloves sideways. This is called planting garlic. Regardless of the method of planting, the quality of garlic will be at the highest level. The teeth were planted, and the soil was covered with mulch (hay, peat, humus, sawdust, film). Garlic begins to grow in the spring. First, those cloves that were lower grow, then those that were at the top. It is important here to remove the onion (leaving a very small number of them) when it begins to burst – if this is not done, the garlic heads will grow less. Watch the garlic arrows – they will tell you when to “clean up”. Arrows need to be broken out not at the moment they appear from the stem, but after they have passed the circle.
When to plant garlic?
Each gardener has his own opinion on this question. We will talk about our experience of planting garlic at three different times: in the summer on August 20, and in the fall on September 20 and October 20. The August planting showed the best results – the cloves, which had time to take root by spring, overwintered best and began to grow actively. The worst was the harvest of 20 October. Garlic did not have time to gain strength, did not endure the winter well and gave a very small harvest. Sprouted garlic will not freeze, as its roots are filled with sugar, which “lulls” the plant for the winter. The results of the September sowing were close to those of August.
We feed the garlic
You need to feed the plant in May – June. A plant that wakes up from hibernation needs vitamins: for example, an infusion of biohumus or horse manure. Do not forget about mulching and processing plants from pests. In general, garlic most of all needs top dressing, weed removal, regular loosening and watering (mulched plantings are not watered, there is enough rain).
Making Garlic Healthy
Garlic, like potatoes , degenerates. Reproduction by teeth is fraught with the accumulation of diseases, and as a result, a drop in productivity. To prevent this from happening, it is very important to occasionally renew garlic from bulbs (air bulbs). Such a bulb is taken from plants that have left an arrow. The inflorescence bursts, the bulbs are colored, the inflorescences are broken out and placed in a dry place to ripen. For planting, bulbs with a diameter of 5 mm are needed. And already in the second year, a full-fledged bulb will sprout from them – this way the garlic turns out to be healthy, and the gardener does not need to buy expensive planting material.

There are several ways to improve garlic:
Landing time: early October. The soil is fertilized with humus (3-4 kg per 1 m) and dug up. Rows are made no more than 4 cm deep and 10 cm apart. Watered. Then every 3 cm you need to lay out the bulbs and sprinkle them with earth. In spring and summer, you need to take care of the planting just like regular garlic. By August, single-toothed teeth are already growing, which need to be dug up for autumn planting, as soon as the tops turn yellow.
From the air in the first year, single-toothed are usually grown. But in August they are not dug up – they are left to winter. But in the spring they are already thinning out, thereby increasing the distance between the overwintered bulbs.
3) Growing through winter
Bulbs, which should be stored unthreshed in the refrigerator before planting, should be sown in the first half of June. By mid-September, the plant will already strengthen the roots and stem, give a few leaves. By October, winter plants will harden, and even winter will not be a problem for them. Full-fledged bulbs of them will develop the next year.
