Craspedia is a perennial of the Aster family, which came to us from Australia. The uniqueness of the plant lies in its appearance – a completely bare stem is crowned with a spherical top. The plant resembles drumsticks.
The stem is straight, 85-90 cm high. On the upper part of the stem is a round-shaped inflorescence with a bright yellow or lemon color. The inflorescence consists of small tubular flowers tightly connected to each other. Inflorescence diameter 30-40 mm.
Broad leaves are located at the base and have a silvery color. During a particularly dry period, they accumulate moisture. When dried, the flower retains the brightness of the color.

Growing craspedia from seeds
Growing from seeds by sowing in open ground is practiced only in regions with a warm climate. In most cases, the plant is grown in seedlings.
Sowing seeds for seedlings is carried out in February – March. For growing seedlings, it is recommended to use peat pots. This will eliminate the need to transplant and protect the root system from damage.
Peat soil is used for sowing seeds. Seeds are laid out on the surface of the soil, leaving a small interval between them. You don’t need to cover them with soil. The soil is moistened with a spray bottle. To create a greenhouse effect, containers with seeds are covered with polyethylene and placed on a windowsill located on the south side of the house. The temperature in the room should be + 21-23 degrees. Every day, polyethylene is removed for 20 minutes to ventilate the seedlings and moisten the soil as needed. The condensate collected on the polyethylene is removed.
The first shoots will appear in 14-21 days. When seedlings appear, polyethylene must be removed and seedlings should be provided with additional lighting using fluorescent lamps. Place the lamps at a distance of 25 cm above the containers with seedlings.

If the plants were planted in a common seedling container, when they grow up to 5 cm tall, they are planted in separate containers.
For good growth, seedlings need the following care:
- moderate watering;
- soil loosening ;
- good lighting.
Seedlings are transplanted into open ground in May, when the threat of frost has passed.
Transplantation in open ground
It is better to choose a site for the growth of craspedia in a well-lit place, since the plant is photophilous. The soil for planting seedlings is prepared by mixing the following ingredients in equal proportions:
- peat ;
- coarse river sand;
On the site intended for growing craspedia, shallow holes are made at a distance of 25-30 cm, fine gravel, expanded clay or crushed brick are laid on the bottom as drainage. The prepared soil mixture is laid on top of the drainage layer, and seedlings are planted in the holes.
Plant care in the flower bed
After transplanting into open ground, the plant needs regular watering. In hot weather, as well as during the period of active growth, watering is carried out daily, with the exception of cloudy and rainy days. During the flowering period, watering is carried out every other day. At the time of seed ripening, the plant is watered once every three days.
Top dressing is applied twice per season:
- during growth, nitrogen-containing fertilizers are applied;
- during flowering, complex mineral fertilizers are used.
Reproduction by dividing the bush
In addition to seed propagation, craspedia can be propagated by dividing the bush. To do this, at the end of the flowering period, dig out the bush and use sharp garden tools to divide the root into several parts. Each separated part is planted in a separate pot.
Craspedia in the garden
Flower growers fell in love with craspedia for unpretentiousness and late flowering. When most flowers have already faded, craspedia enlivens the garden with its bright blooms.
In flower beds, “drumsticks” go well with the following crops:
- mealy salvia;
- white yarrow.
A beautiful composition can be made with a rich green host. Looks charming in mixborders.
Storage of Kraspedia
The flower is often used in the preparation of bouquets in a living and dried form. Cut flowers are carried out in August, immediately after all the flowers open and the inflorescences turn yellow. Cut flowers are tied in bunches and hung upside down in a dark, dry and well-ventilated area. Drying, the flowers harden. The color of the flower remains the same bright, and the inflorescences keep their shape well.
Kraspedia in bouquets
Cut craspedia, placed in ordinary water, remains fresh for a week. When fertilizers are added to water in a cool room, it lasts for two weeks.
Craspedia is used to make bouquets with almost all flowers. They are used to make wedding bouquets, boutonnieres, as well as flower arrangements for men.
Kraspedia is used in interior design – florarium. Sand, stones, shells, dried flowers are laid out in a glass vase and craspedias are placed in a vase.
Looks good in compositions with:
Often in bouquets they use craspedia, painted in the following colors:
Coloring is done with spray paints.
Types and varieties of craspedia
The height of the bush reaches 70 cm. The inflorescences are spherical in shape. In our region it is grown as an annual. This species has the following hybrid varieties:
- Drum sticks – the variety is resistant to temperature changes, not demanding on the composition of the soil, sun-loving. Feels the need for regular watering and fertilization. Inflorescences have a sandy-yellow color.
- Billy Baton – grown in gardens as an annual. Plant height 60 cm. The stem and leaves are covered with silver villi. Inflorescences are bright yellow.
- Golden Ball – plant height 75 cm. The variety is resistant to low temperatures. Inflorescences are yellow.
- Goldstick – plant height 45-60 cm. Inflorescences with a diameter of 30-40 mm have a rich lemon color. Used in dry compositions and bouquets.
Plant height 30-35 cm. The leaves are wide, covered with long villi, collected at the base in a rosette. Inflorescences have the shape of a hemisphere, with a diameter of 30 mm. The color of the inflorescences is different – from bright orange to sandy. One plant can have several flower stalks at the same time.
Diseases and pests
Kraspedia has good immunity to various diseases and pests. However, if the rules of watering are violated, the plant may be subject to various rots. In the event of this problem, the plants are treated with fungicides and stop watering for a while. In the future, the frequency of watering must be adjusted.
If the air is too dry, the plant can be affected by spider mites. When a pest is found, the plant is treated with an infusion of tobacco or a solution of laundry soap. If the treatment does not give results, insecticides are used.
Kraspedia is not yet grown so often by our flower growers, but it is beginning to gain more and more popularity among florists for its extraordinary appearance. Ease of care, unpretentiousness, good proximity to other plants will ensure the popularity of Kraspedia in the floristry market.
