the best options for vertical beds and flower beds in the country and garden Blog

Suspended and vertical soil beds are an excellent solution for saving space, and the right soil mixture and optimal soil moisture contribute to higher yields. Many options for vertical beds allow you to choose the most suitable model for arranging in a country house or a personal plot, based on specific opportunities. Gardeners often cannot afford to have a large greenhouse in the garden, and in this case, vertical beds are saved.

Crops for hanging and vertical beds

Light, mobile bedswith a small amount of soil are only suitable for annual crops. Perennials with a small root system migrate to apartments or houses for the winter. Since the soil and soil mixture for vertical and hanging beds is prepared individually, it is possible to choose a composition that is suitable for growing almost any crop. Therefore, the main issue is the location of the plant in space. In this regard, compact plants of strawberries, radishes, beets, carrots, lettuce, spinach, greens and flowers are most suitable for vertical ridges. Cucumbers, pumpkins, beans, peas, peppers require a little more space – bag or hanging culture is suitable for them, as well as high vertical ridges of construction mesh. For tomatoes, there is a vertical arrangement technology with roots fixed at the top,

Advantages of hanging and vertical beds:

  • There is no need for hard work of digging the soil, weeding the ridges and tying the plants;
  • In hanging ridges, irrigation water is supplied directly to the roots of plants, water is not consumed for evaporation, so significant savings can be achieved;
  • The crop does not come into contact with the soil – the fruits are clean, not affected by pests and diseases;
  • Obtaining environmentally friendly products, since on vertical beds you can do without chemical treatments;
  • Good warming of the ridges and the possibility of obtaining an early harvest, even in the most northern regions;
  • Light models of vertical ridges are highly mobile; if necessary, they can be removed into the house, greenhouse, on the veranda or under a canopy;
  • You can choose crops taking into account the requirements for illumination: on the upper tiers, grow plants that do not tolerate shading, and on the lower ones, on the contrary, shade-tolerant ones;
  • The ability to choose design solutions and create a unique garden.

Designs of vertical and suspended ridges:

  • Suspended horizontal boxes of various depths with open soil;
  • PVC sewer pipes located one above the other in the form of a ladder in 3-5 tiers with closed soil and an internal irrigation system;
  • PVC sewer pipes suspended vertically with internal irrigation system;
  • Vertical beds in the form of pyramids with wooden, plastic, metal sides or from any other material with 3-7 tiers;
  • Vertical ridges of car tires;
  • Hanging tanks, buckets, planters;
  • Vertical ridges from a construction grid;
  • Designs from plastic bottles;
  • Vertical racks with containers installed on them;
  • Old furniture, such as chest of drawers pulled out to different depths;
  • A vertical wall up to 30 cm wide reinforced with slate or other building material with holes for plants along the entire height of the wall;
  • Flower pots strung on a thin pipe;
  • Rows of high bags filled with nutrient soil.

Consider the most interesting types of vertical ridges in more detail.

Bed of hanging buckets, tanks, plastic containers and planters

Hanging beds

It is interesting to grow cherry tomatoes, cucumbers or petunias in buckets suspended in the usual way, but in the bottom of the bucket you need to drill a hole with a diameter of 7-12 cm and bring the top of the plant into it, that is, plant it with its roots up. Cover the hole with newspaper, mesh or cellophane so that the soil does not spill out. The bucket is filled with soil just short of the top rim and hung securely in a sunny or slightly shaded area. On top of the bucket is open fertile soil so that it is not empty – you can sow lettuce, dill, parsley, basil or radish in it. You can plant a flower that is in harmony with the lower one in appearance, color and texture. Approximately also equip hanging tanks, plastic containers. On sale you can find pots ready for hanging. It is important to remember that the weight of such a bed increases as the plants grow,

Pyramid beds

Pyramid beds

It is advisable to arrange a multi-tiered vertical bed in the form of a pyramid in a sunny place in the garden. It can include from 3-4 to 6-7 tiers, while saving garden space by about 2-2.5 times. A pyramid with flowers, strawberries, herbs or vegetables will become the property of the garden, it will look very attractive and stylish.

A triangular, square or pentagonal pyramid is best created using wooden boards. But you can also use plastic, metal, or pour concrete curbs. The latter option looks the most aesthetically pleasing, concrete is durable and the entire garden bed will last a very long time. The width of the steps should be chosen depending on how the plants will be cared for: you can work while on the path if the pyramid is not wide, or you can move up the steps for wider and higher pyramids.

Car tires

For a round pyramid of car tires, it is better to take imported winter tires – they are more durable and easier to work with. At the base there should be a tire of the largest diameter, and the larger it is, the higher the entire pyramid can be created. Rubber is removed from one side of each tire. This can be done with a knife or a jigsaw. Before backfilling the bottom of the tire, it is good to cover it with geofabric. It will protect the roots from the bear and excessive growth of weeds.

If all the tires are of equal diameter, then they can be laid with a shift – steps, and if this is not possible, then the plants can be planted in holes cut in the tires along the entire height of the pyramid in a vertical plane. Watering such a vertical bed is best done through a plastic pipe, which is installed in the center of the bed and tires are strung on it, like on a children’s pyramid. Holes are made in the irrigation pipe along the upper 2/3, then it is wrapped in textiles so that the holes are not clogged with soil and roots.

Vertical garden beds

Beds from bags

For maximum space savings, vertical beds can be quickly built from ready-made natural or plastic bags . Such beds are heavy, so they are best placed on the ground, leaning against a fence or wall.

DIY landing bag

You will need material for a bag in the form of a rectangle twice as long as the estimated size of the bag, for example 30 cm wide, 2 cm seam allowances are provided on each side. This piece of material will make a bag with a diameter of 20 cm. to stitch, that is, to perform a double seam. If polyethylene is taken as the material, then it can be connected with a special device. Then the bag is filled with nutrient soil, cuts are made along its height for planting. The only drawback of bag beds is their fragility.

Invisible metal mesh beds

They can be made from the remains of a chain-link mesh, gabion or plastic mesh. The mesh is rolled up, the diameter is selected based on which plant will be planted – from 40 to 80 cm. The upper edges are fixed with knitting wire. The mesh cells must be overlaid with straw so that the soil does not fall out. Such ridges are good for potatoes, they can be poured during the tuber formation period, as well as for pumpkins and cucumbers.

Mesh beds

Hanging gardens from plastic bottles

Plastic bottles

Plants with a compact root system can fit comfortably in two-liter plastic bottles. The bottle must be cut in half, the upper part filled with drainage and soil, then inserted with the neck down into the lower part, where to pour water for irrigation. Then fix the bottles with the plants planted in them, for example, on wires to the support. It is even easier to place the whole bottle horizontally, make a cutout for the plant in the upper part, and drill drainage holes from the bottom.

“Pocket beds”

It is believed that such beds were invented by agronomists who made them from foil insulation. The material must be folded in half so that the fold falls on the bottom, stitch or fasten the edges across the width in the form of a long but shallow bag. From above, leave a place for threading the twine, on which the bed will hang. On one meter of the length of the bag, you can make three pockets, stitch along the marking lines, then make semicircular cuts, stepping back from the seam about 3 cm. Moisture during irrigation will drain through the cut out valves, so a semicircle cut is more convenient than a straight cut. You can insert a thin tube into the upper backstage and stretch the twine through it. Attach the ends of the twine to the support. Nutrient soil is poured into the resulting pockets and plants are planted.

How to make a vertical bed of plastic pipes for strawberries

Before making such a bed , you need to think about how to fix it vertically so that it holds firmly and is easy to maintain. The frames of greenhouses are most suitable for fastening. You will need two pipes: an external sewer pipe with a diameter of 150-200 mm and an internal – small diameter – watering pipe with holes wrapped in cloth. Holes are drilled in the outer pipe using a crown with a diameter of at least 5 cm, strawberry bushes are planted in them. The lower edge of both pipes is hermetically sealed with a film. The very first layer from the bottom is drainage, soil is poured on top of it, during backfilling it is constantly compacted tightly. This design of the beds made of PVC pipes is very durable; for planting, you need to choose remontant highly productive varieties of strawberries.

The foregoing convinces that hanging and vertical beds allow you to harvest even in a very small space, and are also an unusual and striking design element.
